The University of Notre Dame
Founded in November 1842 by Rev. Edward F. Sorin, C.S.C., a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, the University of Notre Dame has grown into a distinguished institution of higher learning. Located near South Bend, Indiana, within a metropolitan area of over 315,000 residents, the University was chartered by the state of Indiana in 1844. Originally governed by the Holy Cross priests, its leadership transitioned in 1967 to a two-tiered board comprising both lay and religious trustees and fellows.
Guided by Father Sorin’s vision of establishing a preeminent Catholic university in America, Notre Dame remains steadfast in its commitment to both intellectual excellence and its religious foundation. The University continues to serve as an enlightening force in the world, addressing contemporary challenges while preserving its Catholic character. The departments of theology and philosophy are internationally recognized among the finest, and faculty across disciplines contribute to the mission of integrating faith and reason. From legal scholars exploring civil rights and religious liberty to scientists and engineers addressing environmental sustainability, Notre Dame remains a place where the Church engages in critical thought and scholarship.
As one of the nation's leading undergraduate teaching institutions, Notre Dame has also been at the forefront of research and innovation. Pioneering advancements such as the aerodynamics of glider flight, wireless transmission, and synthetic rubber formulae originated at the University. Today, research efforts continue to drive progress in fields such as astrophysics, radiation chemistry, environmental sciences, tropical disease transmission, peace studies, cancer research, robotics, and nanoelectronics.
With approximately 80% of undergraduates residing on campus, Notre Dame fosters a distinctive and close-knit residential community. Students are encouraged not only to think critically but also to develop character and a sense of purpose that endures beyond graduation. Many alumni fondly recall their formative experiences within the University’s residence halls as integral to their personal and professional growth.
Notre Dame is an institution that honors tradition while embracing progress. It upholds both religious conviction and academic rigor, standing as a beacon of values in an evolving world. Remaining faithful to Father Sorin’s vision, the University continues to inspire and lead with a commitment to excellence, integrity, and service.
