The Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) Invercargill campus, established in 1971, is the institute's primary hub and the birthplace of the innovative Zero Fees Scheme. As of 2026, the campus continues to offer industry-focused education across multiple specialized sites in the city. 

Campus Structure and Locations

The Invercargill presence is divided into three centrally located campuses: 

  • Main Campus (133 Tay Street): The central hub housing administration, student support, the main library, and the SIT Gym. It is the primary location for Business, Health Sciences, Nursing, Hospitality, Tourism, and Trades courses.
  • Te Rau o Te Huia (Centre for Creative Industries): Opened in 2021 in the heart of town, this state-of-the-art facility is dedicated to Art, Design, Film, Animation, and Music.
  • SIT Sound: A specialized facility for Audio Production and Music, featuring world-class mastering studios and high-fidelity sound research opportunities. 

Key Facilities and Services

  • Industry-Grade Workshops: The recently redeveloped A Block features advanced engineering labs, CNC lathes, laser cutters, and automotive workshops.
  • Healthcare and Wellness: A Health Centre on the Main Campus provides free and confidential services, including access to a registered nurse, counseling, and a disability liaison.
  • Recreation: The SIT Gym, located at the corner of Tay and Conon Streets, offers fitness and rehabilitation programs. Membership for students is approximately $85 for 10 months.
  • Dining and Training: The Bungalow Restaurant and Vault Café serve as real-world training environments for hospitality students and are open to the public. 

Academic and Financial Overview

  • Zero Fees Scheme: This scheme allows eligible domestic students to pay only material costs (textbooks, uniforms) rather than tuition fees.
  • Program Range: The campus offers over 250 programs, ranging from certificates to Master's degrees, all accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).
  • International Support: International students receive dedicated assistance, including complimentary airport pickup, two weeks of free initial accommodation, and specialized employment workshops. 

Accommodation Options

All SIT-managed accommodation is within walking distance of the campuses and town center. 

  • SIT Apartments: Modern, furnished units with single ($217/week) or shared ($127/week) room options; rent includes power and Wi-Fi.
  • SIT Flats: Self-catered halls with shared facilities, costing approximately $120-$150/week.
  • Homestays: Students live with local host families for an average of $250/week, inclusive of a private room.
