University of Roehampton's origin dates back to 1841 when it was founded as a training teacher college for women, known as Whitelands College. In 1872, Southlands College was opened, a training college for women teachers. Later in 1874, a training college for young women was opened who wished to teach in Catholic schools known by the name Digby Stuart College. In the year 1892, Froebel Educational Institute was opened in West Kensington. In 1975, Digby Stuart, Froebal, Whitelands and Southlands College federated to form Roehampton Institute of Higher Education (RIHE). The creation was RIHE was approved by the Department of Education and Science in July 1975 and by September, the first students were enrolled.

Roehampton Institute entered a federation with the University of Surrey and was known as The University of Surrey Roehampton in the year 2000. In the year 2004, it was granted the status of an independent university by the Privy Council following the four-and-a-half-year federation with the University of Surrey. In 2006, the university's research was named in the Top 100 World-Changing Discoveries. In 2016, Roehampton University marked 175 years since the foundation of Whiteland’s College in 1841.
