The Callaghan Campus is the primary and largest campus of the University of Newcastle, located approximately 12 kilometers northwest of Newcastle's CBD in New South Wales. Set across 140 hectares of natural bushland, it serves as the central hub for the university's academic, research, and administrative operations. 

Campus Geography & Setting

  • Location: The campus is located in the suburb of Callaghan (NSW 2308) with main entrances on University Drive.
  • Environment: It is characterized by its "bush campus" feel, blending native Australian flora and fauna with award-winning architectural designs.
  • Accessibility: The campus is well-connected by bus and train services, featuring its own Warabrook (University) station. A free university shuttle connects it to the Newcastle City campus.

Callaghan is the primary location for most of the university's colleges and specialized research facilities. 

  • Core Disciplines: It is the central hub for STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine), Humanities, Social Science, and Education.
  • Libraries:
  • Auchmuty Library: The largest library on campus, housing the main collection, including Law and Biomedicine.
  • Huxley Library: Focuses on education, nursing, and fine arts collections.
  • Research Institutes: The campus is closely linked with the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER). 

Student Life & Amenities

The campus operates like a self-contained community with comprehensive services. 

  • Social & DiningBar on the Hill is the main social venue, hosting live music and student events. The Shortland Building serves as a central point for student-focused activities.
  • Sports & Fitness: The Forum Sports and Aquatic Centre features a 50m indoor heated pool, an 18m rock-climbing wall, a fully equipped gym, and multiple sporting ovals.
  • Living on Campus: There are eight residential colleges, including Edwards Hall, International House, and Evatt House. As of 2026, a new 450-bed student accommodation building is under development to meet increasing demand.
  • On-Site Services: Includes a medical center, pharmacy, post office, childcare centers, and a "Makerspace" for collaborative projects.
