Located in the heart of the Essex countryside, ARU Writtle is one of the four main campuses of Anglia Ruskin University, specializing in land-based, animal, and sports sciences. Formed following the 2024 merger of Writtle University College and ARU, the campus combines a 130-year legacy with the resources of a leading modern university. 

Campus & Facilities

The Writtle campus spans a vast 150-hectare estate (approx. 370 acres) and features extensive specialist resources: 

  • Agriculture & Animal Care: A working farm with sheep, pigs, and cattle; the Titchmarsh Centre for small mammals and reptiles; and a dedicated Science Centre with veterinary nursing labs.
  • Equine & Canine Centres: An Equine Training and Development Centre with stabling for 92 horses and three indoor arenas, plus the Lordship Canine Centre featuring a hydrotherapy pool and grooming facilities.
  • Sport & Wellbeing: The Centre of Sport and Health includes a gym, strength and conditioning area, sports hall, and the UK’s first permanent 3x3 basketball courts.
  • Horticulture & Design: On-site glasshouses, floristry rooms, and extensive landscaped gardens used for research and practical training. 

Academic Programs

ARU Writtle offers a range of study levels, from further education (16–18 year olds) to postgraduate research

  • Core Subject Areas: Agriculture, animal management, equine science, horticulture, conservation, and sports science.
  • Writtle College: As part of the campus, Writtle College focuses on diplomas, apprenticeships, and short courses in vocational fields like floristry and dog grooming. 

Student Life & Location

The campus offers a tight-knit community feel within a rural setting, just two miles from the city of Chelmsford

  • Accommodation: There are 14 halls of residence located directly on campus, housing approximately 382 students.
  • Social Hubs: The "College Baa" serves as the primary social center and bar for student events, including the annual Summer Ball.
  • Connectivity: A free shuttle bus connects the Writtle campus to Chelmsford city center and its train station (35 minutes from London).
